For 13
years Valerie has been
a leading vocal coach in Los Angeles teaching streamlined vocal methods
for styles including Pop, Broadway, R&B, Rock, &
Opera.
Valerie accepts students from all levels of ability
– her
clients range from people that are just starting to
celebrities.
She has worked with very young kids as well as professionals that are
on Broadway, Recording contracts, Television and
Film.
As a result of her extensive experience, Valerie has been able to
isolate certain fundamental vocal techniques that are common to all
styles.
Any singer coming to Valerie for vocal coaching will find out in a very
short amount of time which basic technique needs to be strengthened for
them to improve. Valerie specializes in rapidly isolating
exactly
what is causing any difficulties the person may be having with their
singing.
My Requirements and Personal
Views
I will accept any
student who simply realizes that there are things
they need to learn and they are willing to work hard to achieve their
goals. They also need to realize that there is time involved (it
doesn’t happen overnight), and that they have the ability to
improve. I want students that are optimistic about achieving
their goals.
What makes me different from other teachers is that I know and
understand the basic techniques involved in singing well. Knowing which
of the basic techniques each person is missing, so that he or she can
remedy it, is the key to progressing quickly. I treat each person
individually. I’m not a “cookie
cutter” teacher. Each person has their own areas
they want assistance with, unique to them.
What I enjoy most about singing is the creative process. I
love the extroverting expression of music and the creation of an effect
on others.
I don’t have one “favorite style”, or one
“favorite song”. I love music of all
genres. I especially enjoy music that has a lot of range,
dynamics of sound, and is emotionally
impacting, and that could be in any style. Opera has that,
Pop has that and so does Broadway.
I really do love all the styles. I love the theatrical presentation of
Broadway, I love the challenge of singing Opera (it’s very
extroverting). I also love Pop, it’s just
incredibly fun!
Everyone can learn to sing to a certain degree, but of course your
progress will depend on how much work you put into it and how far you
want to take it.
Philosophy of Vocal
Coaching
What gives me the
most
satisfaction is seeing my students really winning in their careers and
in their lives, and seeing them achieve their goals. I enjoy
working with beginners and seeing them start from no experience to
sounding like a professional singer in a short period of time.
I truly care about all my students individually, so I take the time to
find out what they really want to achieve -- and then I work to achieve
that for them. I don’t put any limitations on them.
Dedication, commitment and willingness to take direction is what is
required of each for them to be successful.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
1.
Can you describe your teaching method?
I start a student off with the foundation of classical basics, then I
build on top of that the technique of the style that they’re
interested in. Whether it be Pop, Rock, Broadway or Opera,
the
final product is that their voice is strong in their chosen style or
technique.
2. What do your students like
most about vocal coaching sessions with you?
I want us to work hard together but we also have fun. I try to make
each lesson interesting to them, so that they walk away with something
new that they now can apply and use.
3. Give an example of what
might occur in a first vocal coaching session.
Basically we find out what the person goals are as a singer and what
their experience has been. I evaluate their voice with various
exercises to figure out what they need to do to improve and what their
program would be. I have them sing for me.
4. Do you vary your methods
depending on the style of music your students sing?
Yes, I do. There are different techniques that different genres require
to be done and I know all those techniques.
5. How should someone decide
if vocal coaching is for them?
They should schedule an appointment with me. If they have
dedication and commitment and I know I can cause improvement for them,
then the answer is yes.
If you have studied voice in the past, and your singing did not
improve, that doesn’t mean that you can’t
improve. I
have a 95% success rate with my students.
6. How do you know what kind
of music you should be singing/performing?
You must do what you love. You can and should try out
different
styles to see where your voice naturally fits. But the style
you
love will always be an important facet of the final achievement you
arrive at. Understand that the voice can create any sound, if
you
really love it and understand it. And with work you will have what
you’re after.
7. What are the most common problems
handled with vocal coaching?
- Limited
range or having trouble hitting the big note
- Problems
with Pitch
- Breathing
- Lack
of power or stamina
- Quality
of tone – generally making the voice sound better
- Stage
presence - having stage fright or lack of confidence
- Stylistic
issues – having problems being able to sing the
style or manner that is desired
- Never
sang before and don’t know how
Performance
Stamina
A Broadway performer having trouble maintaining their voice because
they were singing 6 days a week, and was having a problem with singing
week after week.
Singing performance after performance without difficulty or strain is
something any singer can achieve by application of the Fahren
Voice Method.
I can help you isolate anything that is preventing you from being
consistently able to give it your all. With practice, the end
result of vocal coaching, will be that each and every one of
your performances are top notch.
